The Anubis ransomware group claims to have breached Beyer Law Group (BLG), a prominent intellectual property law firm based in Palo Alto, California. Specializing in patent, trademark, and copyright law for over 25 years, the firm serves a roster of clients ranging from startups to multinational corporations. The threat actors teased the firm’s security posture, suggesting that while BLG has a long history, they may have failed to adapt to modern data security challenges, allegedly allowing the attackers to compromise the network of the roughly 10-person firm which handles business for thousands.
According to the actor, the stolen files contain sensitive legal documentation spanning the firm’s operations. The allegedly compromised data includes:
-
Confidential memos
-
Internal correspondence
-
Commercial secrets
-
Client data and patent application documents (referencing companies such as Apple, Visa, and Ferrari)
