Chess[.]com, the world’s largest online chess platform, has allegedly disclosed a data breach that exposed the personal information of over 4,500 users. The US-based company, founded in 2005, is a central hub for the global chess community, boasting over 100 million registered members and hosting more than 10 million games daily. The company has become a vital institution for chess players of all levels, offering online matches, tournaments, lessons, and social networking features.
The security incident reportedly occurred between June 5 and June 18, 2025, when unauthorized actors gained access to a third-party file transfer application used by the company. Chess[.]com discovered the intrusion on June 19 and immediately launched an investigation, notifying federal law enforcement. While the company has emphasized that its own infrastructure, member accounts, and passwords were not compromised, certain user data was allegedly accessed. The information exposed reportedly includes:
- Names
- Other unspecified Personally Identifiable Information (PII)
In response to the breach, Chess[.]com is notifying all affected individuals and offering them complimentary identity theft and credit monitoring services. The company stated that it has taken additional measures to secure its systems to prevent similar incidents in the future. Currently, there is no evidence that the stolen data has been publicly disclosed or misused.
