Two prominent universities, the University of Waterloo in Canada and Linköping University in Sweden, have allegedly fallen victim to a cyberattack by a threat group calling itself “CyberVolk.” The group claims to have infiltrated both institutions’ systems through FTP vulnerabilities and is now threatening to delete their databases.
In posts published on their Telegram channel, CyberVolk demanded a ransom of $2,000 in Bitcoin from each university, stating that failure to pay within 48 hours would lead to irreversible damage to their systems. According to the group, both universities’ UNIX systems have already been compromised with a custom-built virus designed to destroy the servers if the ransom is not paid in time.
The attackers provided a Bitcoin address in their messages for the ransom payment.
