As India braces itself for the upcoming elections, a new and troubling threat has emerged from the cyber domain. An Indonesian hacktivist group, self-identified as “Anon Black Flag Indonesian”, has publicly declared its intent to launch a series of cyber attacks targeting Indian government websites and databases. This announcement, which surfaced on various social media platforms, raises significant concerns about the cybersecurity infrastructure of the democracy during a critical period.
The group has cited multiple grievances as the motivation behind their planned cyber onslaught. Among them are accusations of India’s alleged previous cyber attacks on websites from Indonesia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Additionally, they point to perceived systemic discrimination against Muslims in India, including difficulties in obtaining visas for religious activities, derogatory statements from certain Hindu priests, and policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which they claim are anti-Islamic.
First Indian victim announcement: The group claims to have compromised sensitive databases from Vinayak Pharma Corp, a prominent Indian pharmaceutical company.
